systems Flashcards
what is a system
a group of organs that work together to perform a function
what makes the cell an open system
it exchanges matter and energy
cell membranes
all cells have them
it separates the cell interior from the environment
prevents unwanted materials
permeable
made up of lipids
the proteins act as passage ways and communicate info from outside the cell to the nucleus
vacuoles
in animal cells they store food, water and minerals
in plant cells they are larger in size and help regulate the amount of water
mitochondria
chemical reactions convert sugar to ATP which is usable form of energy for cells
provides energy for the cell though the process of cellular respiration
chloroplasts
found in green plants and algae. contains a pigment call chlorophyll which captures sunlight
what organelle is responsible for nutrients gas exchange and waste
cell membrane
what are trace elements
minerals in living tissue in small amount
3 similarities in chemical composition of plant and animal cells
both have a mitochondria
both have cytoplasm
both have ribosomes
3 differences in the chemical composition of plant and animal cells
only plant cells have a chloroplast
animal cells lack a cell wall
a plant cell is larger then an animal cell
