What is Behcet’s Disease?
A chronic, relapsing, multi-systemic inflammatory disease of unknown aetiology.
What is the age onset of Behcet’s Disease?
30s-40s
What are the characteristics of Behcet’s Disease?
recurrent aphthous stomatitis
oral ulcers
genital ulcers
uveitis (eye)
mucocutaneous lesions
What is the oral manifestation of Behcet’s disease?
erythmatous, slightly raised area evolving into an oval or round ulcer within 2-3 days, with rolled borders and a grayish yellow necrotic base.
erythematous halo surrounds the ulcer.
What is Systemic Lupus Erythmatous?
SLE
A chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease with a highly variable course,
characterised by the production of a wide profile of autoantibodies directed against nuclear & cytoplasmic antigens.
Unpredictable disease.
Systemic vasculitis with immune complex deposition.
How is SLE diagnosed?
positive DIF
linear deposits of IgG or IgM and/or C3
CD4+ T lymphocytes also present.
What are the oral manifestations of SLE?
lupus
- whitish plaque with erythema or erosive lesion in the center and keratotic striae in the periphery
- telangiectasia (small red/purple capillary clusters, spidery appearance) on lips, buccal mucosa and gingiva
- red mucosal macules and plaques, mucosal ulcers and lesions resembling lichen planus
- recurrent aphthous stomatitis and oral ulcers
