Salivary Gland Tumours Flashcards
List in order (and %) of salivary glands tumours.
major minor salivary glands
Parotid 80%
Submandibular 10%
Sublingual 0.5%
Minor 10%
tumours mostly affect parotid gland
List in order (and %) of malignant salivary gland tumours.
major minor salivary glands
Parotid 15%
Submandibular 30%
Sublingual 80%
Minor 45%
malignant tumours are commonly found in sublingual and minor glands
According to WHO classification 2017
How are tumours classified?
Epithelial neoplasms:
* benign (adenoma) 11 types
* malignant (adenocarcinoma) 20 types
Non-epithelial neoplasms:
* lymphoma
* sarcoma
What diagnostic techniques can be used for tumours?
(4)
- fine needle
- aspirate (FNA)
- core biopsy
- incisional biopsy
What is the most common salivary tumour and which gland is commonly affected?
pleomorphic adenoma (benign)
parotid gland
What are the histological features of plemorphic adenoma?
varied histology “mixed tumour”
* duct epithelium
* myoepithelial cells
* myxoid and “chondroid” areas
How is pleomorphic adenoma managed/treated?
wide local excision
What is the prognosis of pleomorphic adenoma?
can recur
5% risk of progression to carcinoma
What is the second most common salivary tumour, and which salivary gland is commonly affected?
it’s not pleomorphic adenoma
Warthin’s Tumour (adenolymphoma) (benign)
parotid gland
What are the histological features of Warthin’s Tumour (adenolymphoma)?
- cystic
- distinctive epithelium
- lymphoid tissue
How is Warthin’s Tumour (Adenolymphoma) managed/treated?
excision
Which salivary tumour produces a cribiform “swiss cheese” pattern?
Adenoid cystic carcinoma (malignant)
What is the prognosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma?
long term prognosis is poor.
difficult to treat, recurrence.
can metastasise by blood to lung.
Which salivary glands are commonly affected by adenoid cystic carcinoma?
minor salivary glands
What are the 2 cell types in mucoepidermoid carcinoma?
- squamous (epidermoid)
- glandular (mucous)
