SYSTEMIC CONNECTIVE TISSUE DISEASE Flashcards
WHAT IS COLLAGENOUS DISEASE KNOWN AS?
describes systemic autoimmune disease affecting the connective tissue
there are 7 groups of collagenous disease
HOW MANY GROUPS OF COLLAGENOUS DISEASE? OUTLINE THEM?
7 GROUPS
- SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOUS
- RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
- SCLERODERMIA
- POLYMIOSITIS-DERMATOMYOSITIS
- RHEUMATISM
- POLYARTERITIS
- SJOGRENS SYNDROME
DEFINE RHEUMATISM
also known as Rheumatic fever:
> systemic > recurrent > nonsuppurative > allergic inflammatory complication of untreated pharyngeal infection with group A P-hemolytic streptococci
characterised by inflammatory lesions in:
> heart
> joints
> subcutaneous tissue
CHARACTERISTICS OF RHEUMATISM
Inflammatory lesions in:
> heart
> joints
> subcutaneous tissue
WHICH ORGANS DOES ACUTE RHEUMATIC FEVER AFFECT?
> carditis > poly-arthritis > chorea minor > skin lesions > subcutaneous rheumatic nodules
WHICH PATHOGEN IS THE CAUSATIVE AGENT FOR RHEUMATIC FEVER
GROUP A B-HEMOLYTIC STREPTOCOCCI
WHAT IS CHOREA MINOR AND WHAT IS ANOTHER NAME FOR IT?
WHAT IS THE CAUSATIVE AGENT?
Sydenham’s Chorea
> disorder with rapid, uncoordinated, jerking movements mainly affecting face, hand and feet
> involvement of basal ganglia of the brain
CAUSATIVE AGENT?
> group A B-hemolytic streptococci
> mostly those with rheumatic fever will get Sydenham’s chorea (chorea minor)
DESCRIBE SUBCUTANEOUS RHEUMATIC NODULES?
> mainly occur over bony prominence in the extremities
> pea sized
non-tender
last 6-10 weeks
