Systematics Flashcards
Taxonomy
Science of naming organisms and placing them into categories based on evolutionary relationships.
Systematics
Science of reconstructing phylogeny (evolutionary history).
Seven major taxonomic categories are:
1.) Kingdom 2.) Division or Phylum 3.) Class 4.) Order 5.) Family 6.) Genus 7.) Species
Kingdom
Broadest taxonomic category, consisting of phyla or divisions. There are five kingdoms.
Divisions
The taxonomic category contained within a kingdom and consisting of related classes of plants, fungi, bacteria, or plantlike protists.
Phylum
Taxonomic category of animals and animal like protists contained within a kingdom and consisting of related classes.
Class
The taxonomic category composed of related genera. Closely related from a division of phylum.
Order
The taxonomic category contained within a class and consisting of related families.
Family
Te taxonomic category contained within an order and consisting of related genera.
Genus
The taxonomic category consisting of very closely related species.
Species
A group of organisms within a genus that interbreed under natural conditions or, if asexually reproducing, are more closely related to one another than to other organisms within the genus.
