Systematic Theology Flashcards
What is sanctification?
It is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives.
What is the perseverance of the saints?
It means that all those who are truly born again will be kept by God’s power and will persevere as Christians until the end of their lives and that only those who persevere until the end have been truly born again.
What is purgatory?
The place where the souls of believers go to be further purified from sin until they are ready to be admitted into heaven.
Soul sleep
When believers die they go into a state of unconscious existence and the next thing that they are conscious of will be when Christ returns and raises them to eternal life (this view is not widely accepted in the church)
What is glorification?
The final step in the application of redemption. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers of all times who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like His own.
What is the invisible church?
The church as God sees it.
What is the visible church?
The church as Christians on earth see it.
What is the local church?
“House church” or just any nearby church in the city or region “Judea and Sameria”
What is the universal church?
The church is the entire community of believers
What is church purity?
It is the degree of freedom from wrong doctorine and conduct, and its degree of conformity to God’s revealed will for the church.
What is sacrament?
Word used more in catholic circles and ceremonies like baptism and the LORD’s supper. Convey grace to people (without requiring faith from the persons participating in them)
What is ordinance?
Protestants (especially baptism have refused to refer to baptism and the LORD’s supper as sacraments. They prefer ordinances because they’re ordained by Christ.
What is believer’s baptism?
Is appropriately administered to those who give a believable profession of faith in Jesus Christ.
What are spiritual gifts?
Abilities empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in ministry of the church.
What is the gift of prophecy?
Telling something that God has spontaneously brought to mind.
What is the gift of teaching?
The ability to explain scripture and apply it to people’s lives. Didaskalia=teaching
What is the gift of tongues?
Speaking in tongues is prayer or praise in syllables not understood by the speaker.
What is eschatology?
Study of the end times
What is millennialism?
The term comes from Rev 20:4-5 where it says “some people came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years”
What is Amillennialism?
The age in which Satan’s influence over the nations has been greatly reduced so that the gospel can be preached to the whole world.
What is postmillenialism?
Christ’s return after the millennium. The progress of the gospel and the growth of the church will gradually increase so that a larger and larger proportion of the world’s population will be Christians. Millennium isn’t necessarily 1,000 years.
What is classical/historic premillennialism?
Christ will come back before the millennium. The present church age will continue until as it nears the end. A time of great tribulation and suffering comes on the earth. After that time of tribulation at the end of the church, Christ will return to death to establish a millennial kingdom.
