Q

What is glorification?

A

The final step in the application of redemption. It will happen when Christ returns and raises from the dead the bodies of all believers of all times who have died, and reunites them with their souls, and changes the bodies of all believers who remain alive, thereby giving all believers at the same time perfect resurrection bodies like His own.

22
Q

What is classical/historic premillennialism?

A

Christ will come back before the millennium. The present church age will continue until as it nears the end. A time of great tribulation and suffering comes on the earth. After that time of tribulation at the end of the church, Christ will return to death to establish a millennial kingdom.

23
Q

What is pretribulational premillennialism?

A

Or dispensational premillennialism. The church age will continue until suddenly, unexpectedly, and secretly Christ will return part way to earth and then will call believers to himself. Christ will then return to heaven with the believers who have been removed from the earth. When that happens there will be a great tribulation on the earth for a period of seven years. At the end of the tribulation, Christ will then come back with His saints to reign on the earth for 1,000 years.

24
Q

What is the rapture?

A

1 Thess 4:17, the church will be “caught up” before tribulation. To be with Christ in heaven.

25
Q

What is tribulation?

A

Great suffering and evil, a great tribulation that exceeds all previous periods of suffering on earth.

26
Q

What is hell?

A

A place of eternal conscious punishment for the wicked. An unquenchable fire apart from God.

27
Q

What is heaven?

A

A place where God most fully makes known His presence to bless.

28
Q

What is annihilationism?

A

Those who deny eternal conscious punishment often advocating annihilationism, a teaching that after the wicked have suffered the penalty of God’s wrath for a time, God will “annihilate” them so that they will no longer exist.

29
Q

What is the difference between justification and sanctification?

A

Justification is legal standing, once and for all tie ,entirely God’s work, perfect in this life, the same in all Christians.

Sanctification is internal condition, continuous throughout life, we cooperate, not perfect in this life, greater in some than others.

30
Q

What are the three stages of sanctification?

A
  1. Sanctification has a definite beginning at regeneration.
    - initial moral change
    - overlap between regeneration and sanctification
  2. Sanctification increases throughout life
-growing in the likeness of Christ.
  3. Sanctification is completed at death (for our souls) and when the LORD returns (for our bodies)

Sanctification is never completed in this life.

31
Q

How is sanctification a cooperation between God and humans?

A

God gives will and power to do life. Jesus also earned our sanctification for us and serves as our example. Holy Spirit also provides holiness within us.

Our role is:
Passive- we depend on God to sanctify so we yield ourselves to Him as a living sacrifice.

Active- we strive to obey God

32
Q

According to Grudem, who will persevere in their faith in the gospel?

A

All who are truly born again will persevere to the end.

33
Q

What are the five things that give us assurance of salvation?

A
  1. Present faith that is active this very day.
  2. Evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts (fruit of the spirit)
  3. Result to one’s life and ministry.
  4. Continuing to believe and accept the sound teaching of the church.
  5. Continuing present relationship with Jesus Christ (obedience)
34
Q

Why do Christians die? (Three reasons)

A
  1. Death is not a punishment for Christians: was a penalty for sin but Christ paid the price.
  2. Death is the final outcome of living in a fallen world. Sin has a physical toll on the body.
  3. God uses the experience of death to complete our sanctification.
35
Q

What are the resurrected bodies of Christians like?

A

Be raised as imperishable. They will not grow old or subject to sickness. Be raised in power super human strength. Be raised as a spiritual body. To a degree of perfection of which God originally intended.

36
Q

How does the dispensationalist see the church and Israel?

A

God has two distinct plans for the two different groups of people He has redeemed. God’s purposes and promises fro Israel are for earthly blessings, and they will yet be fulfilled on this earth at some time in the future. On the other hand God’s purposes and promises for the church are for heavenly blessings and those promises will be fulfilled in heaven.

37
Q

What are the two marks of the true church?

A
  1. Work in purity of the visible church (right preaching of the Word)
  2. Right administration of the sacraments.
38
Q

What are the three purposes for the church?

A
  1. Ministry to God (worship)
  2. Ministry to believers (nurture)
  3. Ministry to the world (evangelism and mercy)
39
Q

What does the Roman Catholic Church teach about the effects of water baptism?

A

Christening is necessary for salvation and the act of baptism itself causes regeneration. The church bestows saving grace on people. Works apart from faith.

40
Q

What are the three alternative views of the significance of water baptism?

A

-Being born again (saves you)
-Covenant outward sign of faith community
-Act of obedience to God in declaration of an inward change.

41
Q

What is the meaning of the LORD’s Supper?

A

We symbolize Christ death because our actions give a picture of His death for us. With His body broken and His blood shed for us. Our participation in the benefits of Christ’s death. Spiritual nourishment. Unity of believers. Christ affirms His love for me and all the blessings of salvation are reserved for me. I affirm my faith in Christ.

42
Q

What are the three views of the presence of Christ in the LORD’s Supper?

A

-Catholic: Food becomes Christ body and blood
-Lutheran: In, with, under
-Protestant: Symbolic and spiritual presence

43
Q

Who should participate in the celebration of the LORD’s Supper?

A

Only those who believe in Christ. Also self-examine.

44
Q

What are the purposes for the spiritual gifts?

A

Given to equip the church to carry out its ministry until Christs return.

45
Q

Does the NT give us a complete listing of the spiritual gifts?

A

No, depending on specificity (399)

46
Q

Have some of the spiritual gifts ceased?

A

Cessationist: Yes
Charismatics: No

47
Q

Are the words of gifted prophets in the church equal in authority with the Bible?

A

For the most part no. Some cessationists, yes

48
Q

How should we understand what happened when our prayers for healing don’t result in the healing?

A

God has His timing, be thankful in all circumstances to us through illness and suffering.

49
Q

What is the purpose of the gift of tongues?

A

To gain a more intimate communication with God in prayer. An additional means of fellowship directly with God in prayer and worship.

50
Q

How will Jesus return?

A

Physically with heavens cry and archangels call with the sound of a trumpet.

51
Q

Concerning Christ’s second coming, on what points do evangelicals agree and disagree with one another?

A

Do Jews go to heaven? Could Christ return at any time?

52
Q

Will Jesus come back at any moment?

A

Prophecies must be fulfilled first, but Christ can fulfill them at any time. Unlikely but possible.

53
Q

What are the signs given in scripture that will precede Christ’s coming.

A

-Preaching to all nations
-great tribulation
-False prophets working signs and wonders
-signs in the heavens
-coming of the man of sin and rebellion
-salvation of Israel

54
Q

What will final judgment be for non-Christian’s? And Christian’s?

A

Degrees of punishment

55
Q

What “moral application” of final judgment does Grudem give?

A

-The doctrine of final judgement satisfies our inward sense of a need for justice in the world
-enables us to forgive others freely
-provides a motive for righteous living
-provides great motive for evangelism

56
Q

Is heaven a place?

A

Yes. When Jesus ascended into heaven, the fact that he went to a place seems to be the entire point of the narrative and this is the point that Jesus intended his disciples to understand by the way in which he gradually ascended even while speaking to them. Also Jesus promised that he will prepare a place of us to where he is.
