System software #5 (real) Flashcards
what is file transfer
the ability to transfer data from one location to another, can be done by copying a file from one folder to another.
• Transfer file from one location to other by copying
what is formatting
• Process of preparing disk for use
During process:
• New file system is installed on a disk
• all data may be erased
what is compression
process of making file size smaller, may be advantageous as it allows more data to be stored on the disk, files may also be transferred more quickly. two methods, one is software based, other is hardware based.
what is system maintenance tools
many different system maintenance tools are included with operating systems, that allow users to maintain the upkeep of their computer systems. examples include
- system restore
-disk defragmentation
-control panel
what is system restore (rollback)
process of replacing lost or corrupt data by replacing it with an earlier backup
what is disk defragmentation
files are stored on computer systems that can over time be fragmented, meaning they are split and stored on different parts of the disk. so it takes longer for the disk heads to move between parts of the file, slowing the process.
defragmentation physically rearranges files on disk so they aren’t fragmented anymore, and each parts of file are stored together, improving speed of accessing data from the disk
what is the control panel
many operating systems use a control panel to give the user control of the software and hardware features. enables user to change settings from one location.
