Why was dictatorship a cause for the civil war (no.1 reason)

A

Assad was in power for 20 years, took over from his family.

There was a want for democracy. Kept everyone poor and silenced. From 2006 to 2011 1/2 of the population was in poverty.

In 2007 35% suffered from drought. Tired of fear and oppression

A

Unrest as Alawites makeup 11% of Syria yet govern (Assad)
Shia and Sunni Muslims were uneasy 70% of Syrians are Sunni
Kurds wanted their own country. Everyone fighting different causes.

A

Iron fist - used fear and violence to suppress.
17000 went missing. On the 6th of March 2011 teenagers were tortured for painting anti-government/revolutionary slogans in Dara
-moved military to the south to suppress uprising, left and guarded border, allowed ISIS and criminals to cross into the country

Began in 2011 in Tunisia.Mohammed
Bonazizi set himself on fire and died in protest of police brutality. The movement spread through Lebanon Egypt etc inspiring countries to throw their dictators.

Girls experience sexual violence and intern pregnancy.Sold as sex slaves and married off because of Isis. Many suffer PTSD and mental illness. An estimated 800 were British.

A

Hospitals, schools, roads and housing have been destroyed.
This means lack of sanitation and health.
Teachers are volunteers, one or two classrooms for all.
No books. One in 4 schools have been damaged, destroyed or occupied. It is estimated in Aleppo 35,691 structures have been damaged
However infrastructure can be rebuild.

A

Russia joined in 2015 once power within Middle East and to assert dominance on the west.
Turkey is a neighbouring country who are fighting against Assad but fear the YPG (Kurdish)
The USA is fighting Assad and Isis
UK and France are fighting Isis
Iran is providing troops to Assad
