Synthesis 2c - Ethers Flashcards
1
Q
What are ethers?
A
Substituted alkanes in which a hydrogen atom is replaced with an alkoxy functional group
2
Q
Naming ethers?
A
The alkoxy group is named by adding the ending ‘oxy’ to the alkyl substituent, and thus prefixes the name of the longest carbon chain

4
Q
How are ethers prepared?
A
In a nucleophilic substitution reaction by reacting a monohaloalkane with an alkoxide.
5
Q
Why do ether molecules have lower b.p’s than corresponding isomeric alcohols?
A
Due to lack of hydrogen bonding.
6
Q
Why are larger ethers insoluble in water?
A
Due to increased molecular size.
7
Q
Why are ethers commonly used as solvents?
A
They are relatively inert chemically and will dissolve many organic compounds.
