anadiplosis
A word or phrase said at the end of one sentence that is repeated at the beginning of the next sentence.
anaphora
the repetition of a word/phrase at the beginning of successive clauses
appositional clause
a clause with two nouns placed next to eachother
asyndetic list
a list with no co-ordinating conjunctions such as ‘and’.
chiasmus
when words/concepts are repeated in reverse order (like reverse parallelism)
clauses
a group of words that contain a verb
complex sentence
a sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent/
subordinate clause
compound sentence
a sentence with more than one subject/predicate OR 2 main clauses joined by a conjunction
conditional clause
a type of adverbial that states a hypothesis or condition
epanalepsis
the beginning of a clause/sentence is repeated at the end of that same clause/sentence
epiphora
the repetition of a word or phrase at the end of successive clauses
exclamative
a word or sentence that denotes an exclamation (!)
hyperbaton
a figure of speech in which the order of words in a sentence/line are rearranged
hypophora
speaker/writer poses a question and then answers the question
imperative
a command (tells someone what to do)
interrogative
a phrase or form of punctuation used to ask a question (?)
inverted syntax
a change in the pattern of words in the formation of a sentence
main clause
a clause that can form a complete sentence standing on its own
minor sentence
a small/one word sentence
mitigated declarative
a declarative which is uncertain and features a qualifier/mitigator
multiclausal sentence
a sentence which contains multiple subordinate clauses
parenthesis/paranthetical break
an explanation/afterthought, often denoted using brackets or a dash
polysyndetic list
a list with more than one coordinating conjunction
relative clause
a clause that has a subject and verb, but cannot stand alone as a sentencere
