“modifiers”; descriptors in language
simple adjectives
“single words”
ex. red, huge, quiet
compound adjectives
formed by combining two words into one, hyphenating or just using two related words but not combining or hyphenating
ex. pickup, low-income, child development
positive form of adjectives
“gradable”; can be inflected to create comparative or superlative forms
ex. smart, smarter, smartest
comparative degree of adjectives
describe the quality of the noun or pronoun they modify by being attributive or predicate adjectives;typically formed by adding -er after or more or less before the positive form
ex. sleepy, sleepier
attributive adjectives
most often precede the nouns
ex. The tall girl is in my class, (tall–girl)
predicate adjectives
can follow a copula ex. The girl in my class is tall (is--tall)
superlative degree of adjectives
reflects a comparison of 3 or more nouns or pronouns; typically formed by adding -est after or most or least before the positive form
ex. sleepy, sleepiest,
