Language (per ASHA)
a complex and dynamic system of conventional symbols used in various modes for thought and communication
Semantics
associated with CONTENT; meaning expressed by single vocabulary items or the proposition expressed by vocabulary items in combination
example: single–> dog= noun, animal, four legs, barks, canine, domesticated
combination–> mommy shoe= the shoe belongs to mommy; shoe mommy= request for child’s shoe
Pragmatics
associated with USE; how form and content of language is used: sufficient amount of information provided to listener
examples: utterances, gestures, body language; intention —-> request
Syntax
associated with GRAMMAR; sentence level structure of language that makes connects words and ideas; includes rules for constructing different types of sentences; dictates word and order
