What is syntax?
How words, phrases and clauses are put together to form sentences and text.
Sentence?
Collection of words that make sense and is complete.
Clause?
Has a subject and verb.
Phrase?
Clumps. Collection of words that have a relationship but are NOT complete sentences.
The old box fell apart
Noun Phrase ‘box’
The dog was barking wildly at me
Verb Phrase ‘barking’
I will catch up with you after lunch
Prepositional phrase ‘after lunch’
The disgustingly huge slimy, frog disappeared.
Adjective Phrase ‘disgustingly huge slimy’
Can also be noun phrase too ‘frog’
hidden phrases embedded within.
The class sat in total silence
Adverb Phrase ‘in total silence.’
Clause Structure..
Must contain at least a SUBJECT and a VERB.
The subject is the agent of the action or the one being talked about in the sentence.
Simple ;
The new instructor taught English to international student.
instructor
Complete ;
The new instructor taught English to international student.
The new instructor
Predicate
Part of a sentence or a clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject.
Is the verb in a sentence that states something about the subject.
