Consonant Production Flashcards
Place of articulation
The articulatory point in the vocal tract where sounds of consonants are produced.
Example of place of articulation
An example would be dental where the place of articulation is the front teeth and the articulator is the tongue tip. Example of dental is “that” or a labio-dental like the word “van.”
Manner of articulation
The process of articulation used in the production of sounds.
Examples of manner of articulation
This could be a stop, where there’s a blockage of the outgoing airflow in the oral cavity like “b” in bat and “t” in ton.
Voicing
The result of vocal cord vibrations
Example of voicing
An example is the bilabial “b” or alveolar “d” where saying these vibrates the vocal cords.
One example of ALL
The “b” in bat has a label of bilabial where the place of articulation is the lip and the articulator is the lip. The manner of the articulation is a stop and it is voiced, meaning that it vibrates our vocal cords.
