Syntax
The study of phrases, clauses, and sentences
Phrase
A group of one or more words that conveys meaning.
Noun phrase
Contain a noun as the head of the phrase (e.g. The happy cat)
Verb phrase
Consists of a main verb and modifiers (e.g. Ate a potato cake)
Prepositional phrase
Consists of a preposition and a noun phrase (e.g. In my pocket)
Adjective phrase
Consists of an adjective as its head (e.g. Very happy)
Adverb phrase
Consists of an adverb as its head (e.g. Very quickly)
Clause
A set of phrases that must contain a subject and a predicate
Subject
Main actor that plays a role with the verbs (e.g. SHE gave the cat a treat)
Predicate
Consists of the main verb of a clause and modifiers (e.g. The potato cakes WERE FRIED LAST TUESDAY)
Object
Provides further information about the subject and the verb (e.g. I ate THE POTATO CAKE)
Complement
A word, phrase, or clause that is necessary to complete the meaning (e.g. She looks REALLY HAPPY)
Adverbial
A functional element which is dependent within a clause (e.g. UNFORTUNATELY, she came in)
Sentence
A means to convey thought, ideas, or statements of fact
Interrogative
