The study of the smallest units of meaning
Morpheme
The smallest unit of meaning
Free Morpheme
A morpheme that can stand alone and still hold full meaning (e.g. Cat, yellow)
Bound Morpheme
A morpheme that only has meaning when it is attached to a root word. (e.g. -s, -ed)
Root Word
Contains primary meaning of the word (e.g. ‘Cat’ in ‘Cats’)
Inflectional Morpheme
A morpheme that doesn’t change the meaning nor the word class (e.g. -s)
Derivational Morpheme
A morpheme that can change the meaning or word class (e.g. Im-)
Affixation
The process of adding a bound morpheme to a free morpheme
Prefix
A morpheme added at the beginning of a word (e.g. Im-)
Infix
A morpheme added in the middle of a word (e.g. -freaking-)
Suffix
A morpheme added at the end of a word (e.g. -s)
