the arrangement of words and phrases to make well formed sentences
compound
a sentence made from 2 or more phrases that are joined together with a coordinating conjunction
fragment
a sentence that is missing either its subject or its main verb
complex
a sentence made from 2 or more phrases that are joined together by subordinating conjunctions.
compound complex
a sentence of 3 or more phrases that are joined by at least 1 subordinating and coordinating conjunction.
simple sentence
a sentence made of only one clause
The 4 sentence types are
declarative, imperative, interrogative and exclamative
declarative
a simple statement that is used to provide information about something or state a fact
imperative
a type of sentence that gives a command, makes a request, or offers instructions, and typically begins with a verb in its base form
interrogative
sentences that seek to gather information, clarify a point, or start a conversation
exclamative
expresses strong emotion and typically ends with an exclamation mark
