Noun Phrase
have a Noun as their head word
Subject
is whatever ‘does’ the verb (agrees with the verb)
Object
is what the verb ‘happens’ to (receiver of the verb)
Predicate
starts at the finite verb and includes everything in the clause that relates to the subject (agrees with subject)
Adverbial
is an additional, optional structure which adds more information to the clause often a when how or why ( modifies verb phrases)
Complement
is the same thing or concept as the subject or object of a clause
Verb Phrase
may just be a single verb, or could have a number of verbs working together
Prepositional Phrase
always begin with a preposition, can have different functions with important consequences
Independent Clause
can stand alone in a sentence
Dependent clause
cannot stand alone must be joined to an independent clause to make a complete sentence
Sentence Fragment
parts of a sentence, not an entire independent clause !
Ellipsis
is the omission of words or phrases that are not required in order to communicate in a particular context, because they can be referenced or inferred
Declarative Sentence
statements of fact or opinion they generally follow the SV(O/V) word order
Imperative Sentence
instructions or directions, sometimes encouragements they are generally verb first
Interrogative Sentence
Questions
Exclamative Sentence
Emotive Expressions which typically begin with a ‘how’ or ‘what’
