What is syntactic development?
The ability to create grammatical constructions by arranging words in order.
What is the one word stage also known as?
The holophrastic stage
What is the one word stage?
12-18 months, single word utterances
Groups of words used as a single unit
Serves a naming function
Eg milk, mummy
They convey complex messages, in which context, gesture and intonation help the parents understand meaning.
Eg juice= i want juice, there’s juice on the floor
What is the two word stage?
18 months, usually grammatically correct sequence of words
Omission of elements like “the/in”
Used for possession, action, location
What is the telegraphic stage?
2years, three to four word utterances
Some grammatically complete eg Lucy likes tea SVO
Others have elements missing eg daddy home now
They include key words but omit elements like determiners, auxiliary verbs, prepositions and pronouns
What is the post-telegraphic stage?
3years, determiners used regularly
One or more clauses appear, conjunctions used, inflectional affixes
5years, basic grammatical rules learned
Tenses used with confidence
Nouns phrases built into detailed structures
