Case Studies For Nurture Flashcards
What is the behaviourist model?
Presented by B.F Skinner
Children hear language around them and imitate it. They are either positively or negatively reinforced by caregiver. Chomsky opposes this.
Problems- parents are more likely to correct on truth value rather than linguistic accuracy
What is the empiricist argument?
Tabula rasa, we are born with a blank slate, and acquire language through interaction with caregivers.
Interactionist ideals.
John Locke in the 17th century coined the term and said that a persons environment determines their development.
What is vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development?
Social interaction plays a crucial role in development of language
What is stage 1 of vygotsky’s theory?
- Social interaction
We first learn language through communication with others, which lays the foundations for language acquisition
What is stage 2 of vygotsky’s theory?
- Zone of proximal development
ZPD, range of tasks a child can perform with guidance, but not yet independently
Language learning occurs through an experienced person helping progress
What is stage 3 of vygotsky’s theory?
- Cultural influence
Influenced by cultural context
The tools of language, including vocabulary and grammar, shaped by norms and practices of a culture
