Synovial diseases Flashcards
What are the key features of synovial cysts
Synovial cysts (typically involving the elbow joint) are occasionally seen in older cats with evidence of pre-existing osteoarthritis
These animals present with joint swelling but the lameness generally seen is thought to be likely due to the underlying DJD rather than the cyst itself
Treatment:
- excision of the cyst is not recommended
- treat the underlying joint disease
- aspiration of the fluid is possible if it bothers the cat
What are the key features of synovial osteochondromatosis
This is a begnin condition that is typically seen in middle-aged to older cats
It is associated with chronic inflammation of the synoviocytes (likely secondary to DJD)
These exostoses can cause lameness due to pain and joint restriction
Treatment may involve surgical excision
- recurrence can occur
Antalgics such as NSAIDs are beneficial
