Syndromology and Dental Anomalies Flashcards
What is hypodontia, its frequency and associated dental findings?
Agenesis of one or more teeth.
Occurs in about 2.3 to 11.7 percent (permanent dentitions)
Associated with microdontia and conical teeth
What is a synndrome?
A pattern of mmalformations resulting from the action of a single cause on more than one developmental field
What is ectodermal dysplasia and what are associated dental signs?
ABsence or abnorrmality of ectodermally derived structures.
Associated with delayed eruption of primary teeth and conical primary incisors
What is the frequency of supernummery teeth and what are some associated dental findings?
1 - 3.5% for the permanent dentition
Associated with failure of eruptinon of the central incisors
Cleinocranial dysplasia
How should supernumery teeth be managed?
If unable to erupt, surgical removal generally indicated
If emerging, simplte extraction possible or the supplementary tooth might be worth retaining
Why should unerupted supernumery teeth by removed?
1) Prevent unfavourable eruption
2) May have effects on addjacent permanent teeth
3) May undergo cystic degeneration
How should dens invaginatus be managed?
Fissure seal as early as possible (as there is a risk of pulp necrosis, abscess and facial swelling)
Should be suspected if there is facial swelling associated with non-carious teeth in upper canine/labial region
How should dens evaginatus be managed?
1) Composite buildup to support tubercle
2) Gradual enamel reduction
3) If tubercle fractures, consider Cvek pulpotomy
How can double-teeth present?
Consecrene: Joining of teeth by cementum
Fusion: Joining of teeth via dentine or pulp
Germination: BUdding of a secoond tooth from a single tooth germ
Occurs about 2.5% in primary dentition
How should double teeth be managed?
1) Early fissure sealing of the central groove
2) Surgical seperation of the fused permanent teeth without pulpal invoolvement
3) Consider orthodontics, implants, autotransplants, or prosthetics
What are some examples of abbnormal root formation??
1) Tauroddontism
2) Accesory roots
3) Root dilacerations
