Q

neurotransmitters

A
  • chemical acetylcholine
  • a chemical substance released from axon terminals at a synapse to carry impulses across the gap
  • when impulses reach the terminal branches of axons they cause the vesicles to in the pre-synaptic membrane of the synaptic knob to burst (releasing the neurotransmitters which diffuse across the gap)
  • the impulses cause a chemical process which stimulates receptors in the post-synaptic membrane to initiate nerve impulses

Q

importance of synapse

A
  • flow of impulse is in one direction only
  • dispersal of impulses to many other neurons
  • they can filter out continual unnecessary or unimportant stimuli
