synapse Flashcards
1
Q
synapse structure
A
- mitochondria
- synaptic vesicles
- neurotransmitter
- synaptic cleft
- neuroreceptors in post-synaptic membrane
- wave of depolarisation- nerve impulses
2
Q
neurotransmitters
A
- chemical acetylcholine
- a chemical substance released from axon terminals at a synapse to carry impulses across the gap
- when impulses reach the terminal branches of axons they cause the vesicles to in the pre-synaptic membrane of the synaptic knob to burst (releasing the neurotransmitters which diffuse across the gap)
- the impulses cause a chemical process which stimulates receptors in the post-synaptic membrane to initiate nerve impulses
3
Q
importance of synapse
A
- flow of impulse is in one direction only
- dispersal of impulses to many other neurons
- they can filter out continual unnecessary or unimportant stimuli
