peripheral nervous system Flashcards

Q

PNS

A
  • consists of the tissue outside the CNS
  • 12 pairs of cranial nerves
  • 31 pairs of spinal nerves
  • sensory function (collects information from the receptors and transmits them along afferent neurons to the CNS)
  • motor function (transmits impulses from CNS by efferent neurons to bring about an appropriate response)

Q

division

A
  • somatic NS (conducts impulses from CNS controlling voluntary movement)
  • autonomic NS (conducts impulses from CNS controlling involuntary muscles and glands)
  • autonoomic SN (sympathetic = fright or flight adrenalin ; parasympathetic = rest and digest - speeds up or slows down heart and respitory, adjusts blood pressure and body temp. etc…)
