Being in a “depressed mood most of the day, nearly everyday” (feeling sad, empty, hopeless, or appearing tearful to others), and loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A person experiences anxiety in the form of tenseness, restlessness, lack of focus, fear, or of losing control
Anxious Distress
A person experiences some manic symptoms such as elevated moods, increased energy, or talkativeness
Mixed Features
A person experiences lack of interest or pleasure in activities
Melancholic Features
A person may experience elevated moods for certain or around particular people, or may show weight gain, increased appetite, or excessive sleep
Atypical Features
A person may experience delusions or hallucinations
Mood-congruent Psychotic Features
A person may show catatonic symptoms (staying still or immobilized for long periods of time)
Catatonia
A.K.A Seasonal Affective Disorder, A person experiences the symptoms of major depressive disorder only during a particular time of the year (eg. fall/winter) / people refer to it as winter blues
Seasonal Pattern
Symptoms appear during pregnancy or in the weeks following birth
Peripartum Onset
A person experiences mild to moderate depressed moods for most of the day nearly every day for at least two years and displays two of symptoms of MDD
Persistent Depressive Disorder
Is a childhood condition of extreme irritability, anger, and frequent, intense temper outbursts
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
A health problem that is similar to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) but more serious, causes severe irritability, depression, or anxiety in the week or two before period starts
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
Previously known as manic-depression, is characterized by a single or recurrent manic episode
Bipolar I Disorder (BD I)
Characterized by single or recurrent hypomanic and depressive episodes
Bipolar II (BD II)
A mental disorder that involves numerous periods of symptoms of depression and periods of symptoms of hypomania
