Symbolism and the Yacht Flashcards
This quote shows how much Alec believes in his dad. At this point in the play their relationship is stable and still has hope.
“Ah’m gonnae get ma da tae fix it up. Ma da’s a sailmaker”
At the very end of the play, Alec and Davie throw their possessions into the fire to keep themselves warm. Alec picks up the yacht.
The yacht is then thrown into the fire. Davie never did make it a sail and now Alec is all grown-up. This signifies the end of their relationship. Any hope there had been for Davie to fufill his promise is gone.
Alec: “You were always gonnae fix it up for me”
Davie: “Ah always meant to”
As the yacht burns away, Alec finally sees what it could have been. If his father had kept his promise, things could have been so different.
“The yacht had a sail of flame”
This is a pun, a joke based on the sound of the words. This quote foreshadows what will happen in the rest of the play; Alec did have a yacht but no one saw it because it was never fixed up.
