Alec is taking an interest in Catholicism despite the fact he’s is is Protestant. The idea of Mary is comforting to him since he is grieving over his own mother.
“The middle parts blue … see. That’s the colour ae Mary, the mother ae God.”
Billy talks about how green is a bad colour. He says that the Catholics, “made it bad,” proving the religious divide.
“How can a colour be bad?”
The men take pride in their religion, they feel that being Protestant is superior to being Catholic.
“Ah’m not ashamed tae show ma colours”
Alec turns to religion when his mother dies and devotes a lot of time to it. Davie isn’t interested.
“Right wee religious fanatic these days eh?”
The Virgin Mary; a Catholic symbol. Ian thinks the symbol is bad luck because they are Protestant.
