Symbolism of Gatsby - how is the symbol of the American dream

A

“I suppose he’d had the name ready for a long time, even then - his imagination never really accepted [his parents] at all”

~ Gatsby came from humble backgrounds but he worked his way up to the upperclass by becoming a bootlegger.
~ he didnt want to be associated with coming from the lower working classes therefore, he preffered to change his name to Jay Gatsby from James Gatz. 
~ He worked very hard and wrote out his schedule on the back of a Hopalong Cassidy book that he stuck too since he was a very young boy as he knew he was destined for greatness and didn't want to be a farmer like his parents.

A

“He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose it.”

~ as he realises that Daisy isn’t worth it and that his life almost seems pointless now.
