- Time & how G stopped believing in symbols.
Green Light
“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us… so we beat on boats against the current”
Symbolism of Gatsby - how is the symbol of the American dream
“I suppose he’d had the name ready for a long time, even then - his imagination never really accepted [his parents] at all”
~ Gatsby came from humble backgrounds but he worked his way up to the upperclass by becoming a bootlegger. ~ he didnt want to be associated with coming from the lower working classes therefore, he preffered to change his name to Jay Gatsby from James Gatz. ~ He worked very hard and wrote out his schedule on the back of a Hopalong Cassidy book that he stuck too since he was a very young boy as he knew he was destined for greatness and didn't want to be a farmer like his parents.
Symbolism of Setting
“a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville”
“the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water”
“a valley of ashes - a fantastic farm where ashes grow… where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and… of ash grey men”
~ East Egg vs West Egg symbolises the conflict between Tom and Gatsby
~ VOA is a moral dumping ground
~ NYC is where they all loose moral
how G is disappointed by D
“He was was running down like an over-wound clock”
“He must have looked up at an unfamiliar sky through frightening leaves and shivered as he found what a grotesque thing a rose it.”
~ as he realises that Daisy isn’t worth it and that his life almost seems pointless now.
