point of view
describes a narrators position in relation to the story the narrator is telling
second-person point of view
rare, some stories are told using second person pronouns (you). cast the reader as a character in the story
first-person point of view
told by a narrator who is a character in the story and who refers to him or herself as (I)
third-person point of view
uses she, he, it, they. keeps the narrator from a distance and prevents them from playing a role in the story’s plot
omniscient, all-knowing
narrators know what every character thinks or feels
limited omniscient narrator
only know and relate what one major or minor character thinks or feels
omniscient narrator
shares what all characters think and feel
symbol
objects, places, events or characters that have meaning and significance beyond their physical form
allegory
an entire literary work in which abstract ideas appear in concrete ways.
