protagonist
the main character in a work; often a hero or heroine, but not always
antagonist
character in a story or play who opposes the protagonist. villain-evil antagonist

a character who exhibits a range of emotions and who evolves over the course of the story
flat character
a character embodying only one or 2 traits and who lacks character development
stock character
type of flat character based on stereotype used for humor or satire
direct characterization
narrator tells the reader who a character is by describing the background, motion, temperament, or appearance of a character.
indirect characterization
an author shows rather than tell us what a character is like throught what the character say, does, or thinks or through what others say about the character.
