Second-person point of view
Though rare, some stories are told using second-person pronouns (you). This cast the reader as a character in the story.
First-person point of view
Told by a narrator who is a character in the story and who refers to him- or herself as āIā.
Third-person point of view
A narrator using pronouns he, she, and them.
Limited omniscient narrators
Told by a narrator who relates the action using third-person pronouns (he, she, it). The narrator is usually privy to the thoughts and actions of only one character.
Omniscient narrator
Told by a narrator using third-person pronouns. This narrator is privy to the thoughts and actions of all the characters in the story.
Symbols
A setting, an object, or an event in a story that carries more than literal meaning and therefore represents something significant to understanding the meaning of a work of literature.
Allegory
A literary work that portrays abstract ideas concretely. Character in a allegory are frequently personifications of abstract ideas and are given names that refer to these ideas.
Archetypes
A cultural symbol that has become universally understood and recognized.
