Point of View
Describes a narrator’s position in relation to the story the narrator is telling
First-Person POV
Told by a narrator who is a character in the story and refers to themselves as “I”.
Second-Person POV
Rare; Uses second-person pronouns (you)
Third-Person POV
Uses third-person pronouns (he, she, they)
Limited Omniscient Narrators
Told by a narrator who relates the action using third person pronouns; Narrator is usually privy to the thoughts and actions of only one character
Omniscient Narrator
Told by narrator using third person pronouns; Is privy to the thoughts of all the characters.
Symbol
A setting, object, or an event in a story that carries more than literal meaning and therefore represents something significant to understanding the meaning of a work of literature.
Allegory
A literary work that portrays abstract ideas concretely; Characters in an allegory are frequently personifications of abstract ideas and are given names that refer to these ideas.
Archetypes
A cultural symbol that has become universally understood and recognized.
