Plot
Several basic events that form a whole narrative
Setting
When and where a story takes place.

Conflicts
The tension, opposition or struggle that drives the plot
Exposition
Significant background information about the characters, setting, and situation.
Rising Action
After important event, the conflict becomes more clear and the main character starts to experience complications.
Climax
When the story’s tensions peak; the turning point when everything changes
Suspense
A literary device that uses tension to make the plot more exciting.
Comedy
Has a light, amusing plot, features a happy ending, and is written and performed in the vernacular; funny, humorous
Tragedy
When the protagonist experiences a series of unfortunate reversals due to some tragic flaw.
Falling Action
Details the effects of what happens at the climax.
Denouement
“untying the knot”; readers learn how the conflict has reached a solution; expresses a moral of the story.
Resolution
The working out of a plot’s conflicts, following a climax.
In Medias Re
“In the middle of the action”; prior to an important event.
Flashbacks
A scene that is set in an earlier time than the main action.
