motivation: symbols arouse emotion and stir people into action.
social: bind communities together and give people shared identity
communication: communicate aspects of experience that are otherwise inexpressible, evoke feelings of power
clarification and disclosure: reveal insight into divine
what does Tillich claim symbols are?
symbols are poetic and liturgical and cannot be killed by science.

- literal- non symbolic language as the ultimate ground of being
- symbolic- qualities or actions ascribed to god. these cannot be applied literally
what does the cross symbolise in Christianity?
it reminds christians of the sacrifice of Jesus and reminds them of their beliefs in god and plan for salvation of human beings
how does Tillich compare symbols to art and music?
symbolic language works can work in the same way as art or music, as they can have a deep and profound effect upon us that only we can explain.

god, the sacred, for which all else is sacrificed
