SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP Flashcards
Interacting organism are of the same species
Intraspecific
Interacting organism of different species
Interspecific
symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved.
Mutualism
an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm
Commensalism
a relationship between the two living species in which one organism is benefitted at the expense of the other.
Parasitism
Examples of mutualism
Humans and Plants - Humans use the oxygen given by the plants. In return, plants use carbon dioxide, which is exhaled by the Humans.
Aphids and ants - Ants feed on the honeydew produced by aphids and may offer them protection in return
Bees and flowers- Bees need the nectar and pollen as a source of food, while flowers rely on the bees for pollination which is essential for their reproduction
Clownfish and sea anemones- the clownfish finds protection within the stinging tentacles of sea anemones. In return, clownfish tend to attract other fish to the anemone which then fall victim to their stinging tentacles
Examples of commensalism
Cows under the tree
Birds nest in the tree-benefit from the shelter provided by the trees without harming the trees
Epiphytic Plants on Trees - They benefit from the elevated position for sunlight without harming the host tree.
Examples of Parasitism
Ticks on Mammals- feed on the blood of the host, which can transmit diseases and cause harm to the host
Lice on Humans or Animals- They feed on blood, causing irritation, itching, and discomfort.
Mosquitoes on Humans- feed on the blood of humans and other animals. In the process, they can transmit diseases such as malaria, dengue.
Grasshopper and grass- grasshoppers are herbivores and the grass is their food source.
association between organisms of two different species in which one is inhibited or destroyed and the other is unaffected
Ammensalism
Example of ammensalism
Penicillium - produce a toxin where it kills other microorganisms but no benefits or harmed towards itself
