What is the first rule of syllibification?
There is one vowel (or diphthong) per syllable.
ἀ κη κό α μεν μαρ τυ ροῦ μεν
What is the second rule of syllibification?
A single consonant by itself (not a cluster) goes with the following vowel.
If the consonant is the final letter in the word, it goes with the preceding vowel.
ἑ ω ρά κα μεν ἐ θε α σά με θα
What is the third rule of syllibification?
Two consecutive vowels that do not form a diphthong are divided.
ἐ θε α σά με θα ᾿ Η σα ΐ ας
What is the fourth rule of syllibification?
A consonant cluster that cannot be pronounced is divided, and the first consonant goes with the preceding vowel.
ἔμ προ σθεν ἀρ χῆς
What is the fifth rule of syllibification?
A consonant cluster that can be pronounced together goes with the following vowel.
Χρι στός γρα φή
This includes a consonant cluster formed with μ or ν as the second letter, which is not natural for an English speaker.
ἐ πί γνω σις ἔ θνε σιν
What is the sixth rule of syllibification?
Double consonants are divided.
ἀ παγ γέλ λο μεν παρ ρη σί α
What is the seventh rule of syllibification?
Compound words are divided where joined.
ἀντι χριστός ἐκ βάλλω
