During the migration, the Helvetians were defeated by the Romans, who colonised the territory of present-day Switzerland.

The Burgundians

- occupied the era of the Lac Léman and the Jura

- 534 the Franks conquered the Burgundian kingdom
The Alamanni
- from Germany (east of the Rhine)
- 496 defeated by Clovis (king of Franks)
- from the 6th century (still under the Franks) they began to infiltrate into Swiss territory
The origin of the Rösi-barrier
- The Burgundians adopted the language of the people in the western Swiss territory: a dialect originated from Latin -> became French
- The Alamanni imposed the use of a German tongue “Alamannic dialects”
The Frankish period
- around 550 Franks annexed Rhaetia (Graubünden) and thereby took control of the whole territory of Switzerland
