Swine/ruminant respiratory Flashcards
1
Q
atrophic rhinitis in swine
A
- 3 week old to slaughter pigs
- sneezing, nasal discharge, poor growth, epistaxis
- lateral deviation of snout (atrophy of dorsal/ventral turbinates)
- nonprogressive: bordetella bronchiseptica
- progressive: pasteurella multocida
2
Q
prurulent (suppurative) bronchopneumonia in pigs
A
- very common in 3wk old to slaughter pigs
- dyspnea, retarded growth
- p multocida, bordetella bronchiseptica, haemophilus parasuis, streptococcus suis
- cranioventral lung consolidation
- neutrophils, macrophages
3
Q
fibrinonecrotic pleuropneumonia in pigs
A
- fibrinous bronchopneumonia
- 10wk old to slaughter pigs
- more severe than prurulent bronchopneumonia
- dyspnea, depression, fever, acute death
- actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, suis
- caudal lobes especially affected - hemorrhage, necrosis, fibrinous pleuritis
4
Q
mycoplasma hyopneumoniae pneumonia
A
- enzootic pneumonia
- 10wk old to slaughter pigs
- cough, retarded growth
- often complicated with prurulent bronchopneumonia
- cilia of respiratory epithelium
- craniocentral lung consolidation
5
Q
porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)
A
- reproductive disease in sows: abortions, piglets born weak
- respiratory disease in pigs of any age: depression, dyspnea
- complications: pneumonia, polyserositis, diarrhea
- lungs not collapsed –> rubbery, discolored
- infects alveolar macrophages –> interstitial pneumonia
6
Q
swine influenza virus
A
- any age affected
- acute onset of fever, cough, depression, nasal discharge
- cranioventral, mutifocal (“checkerboard”) areas of consolidation
- infects epithelial cells of trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
7
Q
fibrinous polyserositis in pigs
A
- 3-15wk old
- fever, depression, dyspnea, reluctance to move, CNS signs, lameness
- bacteria from upper respiratory become systemic
- haemophilus parasuis (glasser’s), mycoplasma hyorhinis, streptococcus suis
- often secondary to PRRSV
8
Q
bovine prurulent bronchopneumonia
A
- bacteria: histophilus somni, p multocida, actinomyces pyogenes, e coli
- viruses: IBR, BRSV, influenza, BVDV
9
Q
shipping fever in cows
A
- fibrinous bronchopneumonia
- dyspnea, depression, fever, acute death
- 1-3 weeks after stress
- mannhemia haemolytica
- cranioventral bronchopneumonia, areas of hemorrhage/necrosis, fibrinous pleuritis
10
Q
infectious bovine rhinotracheitis
A
- bovine herpesvirus-1
- fever, dyspnea, nasal discharge
- severe form: necrosis of respiratory tract mucosa
- secondary bacterial pneumonia is frequent (bronchointerstitial pneumonia)
11
Q
bovine respiratory sincitial virus
A
- 1-3m old calves
- fever, dyspnea, cough, nasal discharge
- secondary bacterial pneumonia is frequent
- cranioventral: firm, dark, consolidated
- caudodorsal: heavy, wet, non-collapsed
- interstitial emphysema
12
Q
bovine tuberculosis
A
- mycobacterium bovis
- emaciation, decrease in milk production, cough, dyspnea, enlarged lymph noted
- granulomatous pneumonia and lymphadenitis
13
Q
ovine progressive pneumonia
A
- caused by a retrovirus (ovine lentivirus)
- similar to caprine arthritis encephalitis in goats
- subclinical disease/weight loss, progressive dyspnea
- replicates in macrophages only
- heavy, non-collapsed lungs
- interstial pneumonia
