Swimming Pool Filtration Flashcards
1
Q
do you need license to run a swimming pool in sg?
A
yea :3
2
Q
what counts as a swimming pool
A
- public has access to
- no need payment also counts
- managed, operated, or run by an organization
3
Q
Reasons for treating pool water
A
- health
- safety
- aesthetics
4
Q
health
A
- Prevent transmission of diseases
- Must be of drinking quality
- Non-irritating to bathers
- Free from taste and odours.
5
Q
safety
A
- water must be transparent so pool bottom is visible at all times
6
Q
aesthetics
A
- pool must be clean, free from films, leaves, surface debris & algae
7
Q
water quality standards
A
- physical - clean and clear
- bateriological - no E.Coli in any 100 ml sample
- chemical - pH is 7.2 to 7.8
8
Q
when tests are carried out
A
- pH value & residual disinfectant = once a day
- chemical & bacteriological = once a month
9
Q
criteria for swimming pool water recirculation
A
- uniform chemical distribution
- surface pollution removal
10
Q
Types of filters
A
- diatomaceous earth filter (DE)
- catridge filter
- sand filter
11
Q
Diatomaceous Earth Filter
A
- remove particulate matter & can clean water faster
- cannot breath it in cuz can be lodged in lungs
- EXPENSIVE but has longer lifespan
- need backwashing
12
Q
Catridge Filter
A
- use fabric membrane to trap marticles
- when filter is clogged & pressure builds, it has to be changed
- no backwashing so little loss of water & chemical
- last 3 years
- more ex than sand filter but cheaper than DE
13
Q
Sand filter
A
- consist of a steel tank with 4 layers of gravel of increasing size
- gravel performs no functions but support sand & distributes water flow evenly
- top layer is finely graded sand
- water forced through filter bed where top layer of sticky aluminium oxide traps the dirt
- spreader above filter bed prevents water from striking sand directly
- bottom of tank has drainage system
- more dirt trapped = more pressure = backwashing to clean
14
Q
Need backwashing
A
- DE filter
- Sand
15
Q
how to tell if sand filter need backwashing
A
- Most filters have a sight glass to allows operator to see water as it passes from the filter to waste.
- When the water in the sight glass is clear, the filters are clean and backwashing can stop
