General
Do not perform any massage technique
Any condition that might be spread along the skin, through the lymph or blood stream.
Any conditions which are contagious.
Any time there is a fever
Any time there is edema related to cardiac, kidney or liver disease
Contraindications
Regional - local
Do not massage a particular area
Acute inflammation of tissue in a localized area
Pitting edema
Any open cut or break in the skin’s integrity
Warts, athletes feet, fungal infection of nails – may be contagious
Rashes which have not been diagnosed
Any area where there is bleeding – hematoma (bruise), whiplash, severe varicose veins
Contraindications

Anytime client is being treated by MD for an acute condition
Clients with chronic cardiac problems, liver disease, or serious liver disease
Clients with compromised immune systems
Recent surgery
Areas of abnormal sensation or lack of sensation - due to stroke, diabetes
