What are the stages of swallowing?
Ingestion
Stage 1 transport
Mechanical processing
Stage 2 transport
Swallowing
What is ingestion?
Food enters into the mouth from external to internal environment. Anterior oral seal with lips
What is stage 1 transport?
Food controlled by the tongue tip and moved onto occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth
What is mechanical processing?
Solid foods broken and mixed with saliva before swallowing
Bolus of food is squashed against palate and tongue
Food is chewed with premolars and molars
What is stage 2 transport?
Bolus moves anterior to posterior by squeezeback
Solid foods moved through fauces to pharyngeal surfaces of the tongue
Seal holds liquids at pillars of fauces
What is swallowing?
Involuntary movements push bolus through pharynx to oesophagus
Epiglottis closes to prevent backflow
Peristalsis occurs to move bolus toward stomach
