suture removal Flashcards
suture
• a suture is a strand or fibre used to unite parts of the body
purpose of a suture
• sutures maintain healing tissues in position
• maintain the clot during the initial healing period
• help to reduce postoperative pain, protect the area from foreign debris
2 types of sutures
absorbable
non absorbable
3 types of absorbable sutures
• Plain Catgut
• Chromic Catgut
• Polyglactin 910/ Vicryl
Polyglactin 910/ Vicryl
A synthetic absorbable material
chronic catgut
absorbable suture that provides a much slower healing, allowing the internal tissues to heal first
plain catgut
Provides the fastest healing for mucous membranes and subcutaneous tissues
3 types of non absorbable sutures
• Silk- strong and easy to use
• Polyester Fiber- One of the strongest sutures
• Nylon- strong and elastic
non absorbable sutures
• removed 5 to 7 days as indicated by the type of surgery
• surgical silk is black twisted or braided
most widely used in oral surgery
interrupted suture
• the most commonly placed sutures for a single tooth socket.
• series of interrupted sutures
• each with its own independent knot
continuous/uninterrupted suture
• a series of stitches tied at one or both ends
• examples of sutures that may be applied in a series are the sling or suspension and the blanket
blanket/continuous lock suture
• each stitch is brought over a loop of the preceding one, thus forming a series of loops on one side of the incision and a series of stitches over the incision
• may be used to approximate the gingival margins after alveolectomy
vertical/mattress suture
• it provides closure for both deep and superficial layers
• Its disadvantage is a relatively high propensity to dig into skin and cause prominent stitch mark scars.
Circumferential suture
• the suture encircles the tooth
• for suspension and retention of a flap
what three precautions should you take when removing sutures
• count sutures, record number removed
• record all observation of tissues, note any adverse reaction
• if sutures have a crust, swab with mineral oil to soften the crust
