gingival reteaction and tissue management Flashcards
gingival retraction
• Temporarily displaces gingival tissue mainly during a crown and bridge
• Widens the gingival sulcus
how is a gingival retraction cord placed
• Placed after the tooth preparation is completed and just before final impression is completed
• Involves packing a retraction cord into the sulcus
3 types of gingival retraction
• Chemical (most common)-placing packing cord
• Mechanical-moving of tissue around the tooth
• Surgical-removal of hypertrophied tissue
-most common is electrosurgery
two types of gingival retraction cords
impregnated
non impregnated
impregnated gingival retraction cord
• Contains astringent to control the bleeding and temporarily shrink the tissue
3 types of impregnated gingival retraction cord
vasoconstrictor
hemostatic agent
10% aluminum chloride
what type of gingival retraction cord would you use if your patient had a heart condition?
10% aluminum chloride
non impregnated gingival retraction cord
• Does not contain chemicals
• Retracts the tissue by force
what direction do you remove the gingival retraction cord
• Remove the cord in a counterclockwise direction
when do you remove the gingival retraction cord
• Remove the cord just before taking the final impression
