Suture Flashcards
What is the primary incision also known as?
inverse bevel/extra crevicular/extra sulcular incision.
What is the purpose of the primary incison?
separate healthy collagen fibers of the gingival flap from the diseases epithelium
Secondary incision is also known as?
Sulcular incision - apically directed into sulcus.
What does the sulcular incision do?
separate gingival crest from the tooth
What are the two key gingival fibers that reinforce the marginal gingiva?
Dentogingival and Alveolar
For what incision is the Orban knife used?
Tertiary - tissue release interproximally
What incision/knife is used to sever the alveogingival fibers?
Orban
Orban knives are indicated with what?
- interproximally tissue release
- sever alveologingival fibers
- remove dz soft tissue collar abutting the tooth
Describe the kirkland knife:
- kidney shaped 2. entire periphery is cutting edge 3. used to remove gingival overgrowth and suprabony pockets 4. maybe used in crown lengthening
What are 2 considerations when applying kirkland knife?
incision is contained in the gingiva, blade is coronally directed.
The Hirschfield retractor, periosteal elevator, and prichard retractor are used to elevate what type of flap due to what design?
Elevate mucoperiosteal flap due to blunt ends
What is a good indication of the prichard curette?
remove granulation tissue from intrabony defects
Describe the sugarman interproximal file: (4)
- narrow tip
- files on both sides
- inserted apical to contact to remove residual interproximal granulation tissue and flatten osseous crestal deformities
- Uses “push and pull” motion
Describe the Ochsenbein chisel: (5)
- straight chisel
- cuts on laterals and tip
- semicircle indentations on both sides of shank that allow instrument to engage around tooth and into interdental line angle
- used to remove widow’s peaks at line angles
- uses pushing motion
Describe Rhodes back action chisel: (4)
- curved
- cutting edge only at tip
- can be used to remove bony peaks at line angles
- uses pulling motion
