sustainable management Flashcards
what does sustainable management maintain
biodiv and economic needs
due to rising populations, intensive methods for resource extractions are often used. What does this cause
disrupt ecosystem, reduce biodiv, completey remove resource if not sustainable
what is coppicing
cutting a tree to a stump and new shoots eventually grow from cut surface. can be repeated
what is pollarding
same as coppicing, just cut higher up to prevent deers from eating emerging shoots.
what is rotational coppicing
when woodland managers cut different trees annually, providing a constant sustainable supply of wood .
what are some sustainable methods to produce large scale timber
any tree which is harvested is replaced by another tree
biodiversity of areas such as forests must be maintaining
selective cutting- only cutting largest, most valuable trees
to reduce tree harvesting, it is possible for trees to provide more wood. how can this be achieved
control pests/ pathogens
only plant trees in their suitable environment
position trees apart to avoid competition
what are fisheries
process of harvesting fish
what are the three principles of sustaining fisheries
- no overfishing as it reduces populations of fish.
- fishing must be managed to maintain the function and diversity and productivity of the ecosystem, therefore no damage to habitat
- fishery must adapt to national and local regulations
