conservation and preservation Flashcards
what is conservation
maintenance of biodiversity (genetic and species) and maintaining habitat and ecosystems, with human interaction
what is preservation
maintenance of habitats and ecosystems in their present condition, minimising human impact.
focuses on keeping things natural
what is the difference between conservation and preservation
conservation- involves human interaction
preservation- no/ minimal human interaction.
what are methods of protecting genetic variation
bring organism from different populations to breed with other organism.
achieved by putting the organism together physically or artificial insemination
what is reclimation
reclaiming a previous community physically after disruption.
e.g. reclaiming a rainforest after disruption by agriculture
which one allows visitation, conservation or preservation
conservation
what are the economic reasons for conservation
allows services for free such as;
fertilise spoil
recycle nutrients
regulate atmosphere
timber, food and fuel production
what is coppicing, and why is it advantageous.
cutting a tree to a stump, it provides sustainable timber production.
what are the ethical reasons for conservation
all species have the right to live
humans have the responsibility to protect species.
what is an example of species providing indirect economic value
insect species are responsible for pollinating crop plants, therefore without insects harvest will fail- farmers go out of business.
what strategies are there to maintain a stable community of a species
control predation/ poachers
provide more food increase carrying capacity
vaccinate against disease
prevent pollution
