Sustainable fishing Flashcards
What are organisations responsible for sustainable fishing?
ICCAT, CFP and NAFO
What is ICCAT responsible for?
Management and conservation of tuna and similar species in the atlantic ocean and adjacent seas
What are CFP responsible for?
Fishing quotas on number of fish caught in areas
What is NAFO responsible for?
Provide scientific advice of management of fisheries in atlantic ocean
What are examples of fishing regulations?
Nets with large mesh, no catch zones, restrict use of small hooks, input fishing quotas, restock sea with young fish only allow fishing at times of year, limit number of fishing boats, inspect fish caught, fish farming, create marine conservation zones, allow only some species to caught and enforcement through licenses and penalties
What is the purpose of nets with large mesh?
Allow smaller fish out so they can grow and breed
What is the purpose of no catch zones?
Provides area for fish to grow and breed safely and restock other areas
What is the purpose for restricting use of small hooks?
Ensures small fish aren’t taken and can survive to breed
What is the purpose of fishing quotas?
Limit mass/number of fish caught
What is the purpose of restocking the sea with young fish?
Increase chance of fish reaching adulthood and breeding safely
What is the purpose of limiting times when people can fish in the year?
Protect breeding season for maximum breeding
What is the purpose of limiting number of fishing boats in an area?
Limit number/mass of fish caught
What is the purpose of inspecting fish caught at ports?
Ensure regulations are being followed
What is the purpose of introducing fish farming?
Reduce pressure on wild populations
What is the purpose of creating marine conservation zones?
To protect vulnerable habitats
