Sustainability Flashcards
What does dynamic conservation mean?
Maintaining diversity by adapting conservation measures to the changing environment and social factors
What is reclamation?
Restoring ecosystems that have ben destroyed
What are reasons for maintaining biological resources?
Ecological, economic, aesthetic, social and ethical
What are ecological reasons for maintaining resources?
Reasons concerning the potential impact on other species and whole ecosystems if certain species aren’t protected
What are example ecological reasons for maintaining resources?
Conserving one animal protected other animals and cannot predict consequences of losing one species
What are economic reasons for maintaining resources?
Reasons involving people, companies or communities earning a living or making more money from the biodiversity is a sustainable way
What are example economic reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Attracts tourism so brings in money, maintains soil so farmers can make a living, protects against natural disasters so less money spent rebuilding, financial gain from timber production and prevents extinction of species with potential medicinal or economic value
What are aesthetic reasons for main thing resources?
Reasons based around the beauty of nature and its ability to enrich lives and inspire people
What are example aesthetic reasons for maintains resources?
Inspirations for musicians, artists, writers and poets, people enjoy beauty of wildlife and people get enjoyment from being in nature
What are social reasons for maintaining biodiversity?
Reasons that are for the benefit of society, providing areas for relaxation, exercise and bird watching
What are example social reasons for maintaining resources?
Attracts tourism so more jobs, fewer people are homeless if protected from natural disasters, international agreements ensure generations can stay in the fishing trade and some habitats provide opportunities for hobbies and excercise
What are ethical reasons for maintaining resources?
Faster recovery from stress and injury in a natural environment, we don’t have right to kill species and responsibility to look after natural habitat
What are the three Rs of sustainability?
Reduce, reuse and recycle
What are sustainable resources?
Exploited economically so it will not diminish or run out
What are the 5 aims of sustainability?
Preserve the environment, ensure resources are available for future generations, allows humans to live comfortably, enable less economically countries to develop using their natural resources and create a more even balance in the consumption of these resources
What is clear felling?
All trees are removed from a certain area
What is an advantage of clear felling?
It is a productive and economical method of timber production
What is a disadvantage of clear felling?
All trees are removed including their roots which is devastating for the natural environment
What is strip felling?
Clearance of small patches of forest leaving adjacent areas untouched
What is an advantage of strip felling?
Narrow strips are cut so that the forest on either side can regrow and reclaim the land, allowing forests to be logged with minimum effort and damage
What is a disadvantage of strip felling?
Better than clear cutting but leads to habitat fragmentation
What is selective felling?
Cutting mature or diseased trees or unwanted species and leaving the rest
What is an advantage of selective felling?
Continual regeneration of young seedling and works well for forests with fast growing trees
What is a disadvantage of selective felling?
Helicopters are needed so thee is a risk of damage to nearby trees and is unsuitable for forests with slow growing trees
