Providing for increasing population without harming the environment
Why does development have to be sustainable?
Need more food - farming
Need more energy - alternative renewable
Producing more waste - pollution
Give examples of how we are supporting sustainable development
Fishing quotas
Laws to replace trees cut down for wood and paper
Education - aware so buy sustainable products
Why are whales commercially? important dead or alive
Tourists - whale watching
Meat, oil, cosmetics
Why is it difficult to enforce rules to stop whaling?
Hard to check people sticking to agreement
IWC (international whaling commission) hasn’t authority to enforce punishments
What are the different views of keeping whales in captivity?
Not much space and kept for entertainment - happier in wild
Captive whales do increase awareness
Captive breeding release whales back into wild
Research increases some understanding … but not about deep water survival or migration
