Interactions Between Organisms Flashcards
What is intraspecific competition?
Compete for resources with same species
What do organisms compete against each other for?
Similar ecological niches - where live and what feed on
What is interspecific competition?
Organisms compete for resources with another species
Why does intraspecific competition have a bigger impact?
Same species have exactly same needs - food, shelter, mate
Give example of how population is limited by amount of food available
Prey increases, so does population of predators. Predator increase leads to decrease in prey. Cycle continues!
Check graph p. 78
Explain examples of how parasites have interactions with organisms
Live off host, take without giving anything back.
Tapeworms absorb nutrients causing malnutrition.
Fleas on dogs are parasites
Give example of mutualistic interactions
Both organisms benefit
Oxpeckers eat pests on buffalo (flies, maggots) but also alert if predator appears by hissing!
Bees pollinate plants, but also get nectar
